Roles during the Music Video Shoot
There are five major job roles that have to be taken care of during filming, and even though we're only a group of three we are planning to take on a role ourselves, however share some roles, such as those of the producer and art director.
The Director: Directs the making of a film.
A director is responsible for organising and instructing cast members and auditions, production design, and other creative aspects of filmmaking. Technically, a director is the author of the film they are creating, as they give direction and create their overall vision within film (within their given budget). They also oversee the scenes shot during film production, and have to have an artistic eye to frame shots and give feedback as well as direction as to what they want to have done.
Technically, this role has already been completed for the most part, and it has almost equally been distributed between Chris, Nanci and myself. We have all, for the last two months, been working very hard on getting an idea down, storyboarding it, creating an animatic, creating the set, and auditioning the dancers and cast. Now, all that is left to do is to oversee the production of the music video and say how things should be in accordance with all the things that have been prepared in advance.
The Cameraman: Films the video.
A cameraman is responsible for the filming of the video and handling the camera, as well as framing shots correctly. They are usually the left hand of the director as he tells the cameraman what to do and what he/she would like the shots to look like. The cameraman themselves usually have little say in what shots happen, they just attempt to make them look aesthetically pleasing.
This role is most likely going to be given to me during the music video shoot as I feel that I am the one who has the most experience with a camera. When we go back to the post where the group members were introduced, we discussed eachother's strengths, and mine clearly stood out to be the most creative ones.
The Art Director: Responsible for continuity.
An art director has the responsibility to make sure that everything in the video matches up and that the editor later on won't have the biggest issues when it comes to continuity. The art director's job is to oversee the entire location, props, costumes, make-up, and so on, to make sure that everything is in place exactly the same it was in the shot previously, so that everything works the way it should. They must be very observant.
I feel as if this is a role that should probably be distributed across all three of us, however should be the main role of one person (not me, as I'd probably be the cameraman), and the other two should always have an eye out, but don't have to keep as sharp of an eye as the main. I feel as if Nanci would be quite good at this because she has worked in theatre as well as behind the scenes which can probably help make small details evident to her.
The Producer: Makes sure things go well.
A producer is responsible for everything that goes along with the shoot, to make sure that everything runs smoothly. This includes thing such as talking to the cast and crew, making sure everyone is doing their job, and frankly have to be quite strict with who is doing what, and if people fool around. There is only ever a limited amount of time on set and therfore the producer has to make sure that this goes as smoothly as possible, and that everything is in order.
This has been our job as well as being the director ever since the beginning of the project. We are currently being producers by making sure that we have the set sorted out, that the cast knows who they are, that they are in the music video, and through the call list they will know when and where they have to be. Throughout the music video shoot the producer will probably have to keep a close eye on time, look at the storyboards, talk to the cast and communicate with the director to make sure everyone knows what is going on. I feel as if Chris would be quite good at this.
Sound Playback and Lighting Desk: Responsible for sound and lighting.
The person that works with sound and lighting is probably one of the most important people on set. They are the ones responsible for what the music video will look like in terms of lip-sync and whether people were ready or not, and the lighting is important because of the way the set and people are presented, as well as having effects with it.
I don't think that we'll be the ones on the lighting desk, however we will be the ones giving direction as to what we want. What we need within our music video is quite straightforward, which therefore shouldn't make it a difficult thing to figure out with the people on set with us. Sound playback also shouldn't be too much of a difficult task as they would be working with the director, producer and cameraman to make sure everyone is ready to get going.
