| An Infograph about the British Music Industry in 2015 by the British Phonological Industry |
BPI did research into the British music industry in 2015. What strikes me immediately is that the artists mentioned in this infograph are from various genres, which means that the entire market is dominated not only by the Pop genre, but so much more. This is due to people's various different music tastes.
What doesn't surprise me is that Adele's album "25" was sold over 2.5 million times in the UK. Similarly, Ed Sheeran's and Sam Smith's albums "X" and "In the Lonely Hour" were sold around 2 million times. Whilst online streaming is becoming a more anticipated and more favourable resource of music (as evidenced by an increase of 14 billion audio streams within one year), around 66% of music sold today is still purchased as a physical copy. Vinyl sales have also increased by 64%. Whether or not that will continue increasing will depend on people's personal preference of having both a digital and physical copy, or one of both. This also means that traditional media and means of marketing still work better than digitally.
Digital formats are now valued at 54% of all UK music consumption. Whilst I made the statement above that vinyl sales and CD sales are still very successful, this also shows that the digital age is upcoming. This would indicate that marketing online is more important in comparison to traditional, and so the run for good websites and music videos will become more important than digipaks, although those will probably always remain as (at least) collectors items.
