What Company would Produce and Distribute our Film?

http://www.constantin-film.de/

The media institution that could potentially produce our thriller would be Constantin Films (past Neu Constantin Film), the first german film distributor with it's own production company founded in 1977 by Bernd Eichinger. It is one of the market leaders in the German show and entertainment production business and has the ability to produce and distribute it's films world wide, which gives them the ability of making quite a lot of profit. This production and distribution company would be suitable to create our thriller because it has the ability to create a wide range of successful films; we believe that their success rate and their widely known reputation counts would benefit us in creating and distributing our thriller successfully.
Our thriller is a more psychological thriller which has unique elements, some of which subvert to certain stereotypes (as an example, the thriller that we're making shows a male character as the killer and a male character as the victim, which subverts the stereotype of a woman always being the victim and a hero coming to save her). Psychological thrillers are some of which play around the idea of either playing with someones mind or perhaps also being about the psychological challenges that a certain character has to face. In the case of our thriller, it revolves around the mind of our killer, who seems to be having neurogical problems (hence him painting a picture with the blood of his victim). Constantin Films has created several thrillers, which is why we believe that they would have the ability to create our thriller in a way that it would work well, and that wouldn't take away from the story, but make it more creepy in a way or another.
One film that Constantin Films has created and distributed is the film Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (aka. Perfume). Perfume is an independent german fantasy thriller based on the 1985 novel Das Perfüm by Patrik Süskind, even though it could be argued that this film is a psychological thriller in some way. It was directed by Tom Tykwer and grossed $135 million worldwide.. The entire movie is set in 18th century France and revolves around Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw), a man who was born without an own personal scent, but who happens to be an olfactory genius, which influences him and sets him a homicidal target to find the perfect scent. The killer in this film (Grenouille) happens to be psychologically impacted on finding the perfect scent, which he gets from several outstandingly beautiful women spread across France, eliminating and stealing their natural scent, which he then uses to create the Perfume. Even though the storyline isn't exactly similar to ours, it still revolves around a killer being psychologically impacted by something, showing his side of the story and how he is impacted by everything going on around him, and how his neurogical disorder seems to influence what he is doing. Our thriller seems to revolve around our killer as we follow him alongside his mental downfall and how he eliminates his victims, or what he does after murdering them – similarly as it had been done in Perfume. I feel because Constantin Films has had the experience of creating a thriller that has these kind of elements within it, (even though it was based on the novel by Süskind) it would benefit our thriller in a way that this production company already has experience with how to show a thriller from the killers perspective in a way that it is creepy, yet still understandable and interesting at the same time.

Constantin Films doesn't spare on the production costs of films – even though they spend less money than larger production and distribution companies, they spend a fair amount of money on their films; Perfume cost around an estimated $60 million to make, being one of the most expensive German films on the market. Constantin Films also has the ability to hire high-grossing actors and directors such as Alan Rickman, Logan Lerman, Paul W. S. Anderson, Orlando Bloom, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, and even launch their own independent films franchise, Resident Evil. I believe that our film could be a very complex film to make, and difficult execute properly without destroying the creepiness that it is required to have. If created on a lower budget, the execution of the film could go very differently. I imagine that our film needs to have very high quality acting in order for the ideal of the psychological killer to come across properly – the role that we had planned out is a very difficult role to play; the actor needs to be able to act as if he were on the verge of insanity, and as if he was an utter perfectionist who wouldn't be able to cope with anything unless it was done to his degree of perfection. With a lower budget film it would probably be made more difficult for us to hire an appropriate actor who would be able to enact the psychologically destroyed killer that we all had in mind – high grossing actors are famous and loved for a reason; they do their job well, to an extent where barely anyone is able to replicate it that well.
Constantin Films is a company that is well known across the entire planet; as it is also a distribution company, it has the ability of making sure how it's films are released. As it is a widely known company, it has the ability of releasing it's films on the bigscreen cinemas and release them as a DVD. Many of their films have had the success of gaining many cinema-goers, from somewhere in between 2 million to 8 million visitors for each individual film. This leads me to believe that a grand profit that his company makes is from the success their films have whilst being shown in cinemas, and gives me the impression that they have the ability to promote their films well by using above-the-line promotion, such as using trailers, billboards, etc. By doing this, they will gain more people to watch their films, and therefore more people to buy the films in the end, therefore generating profit, which will go back into the company to promote other films. I think that the company would be able to make our film a good, interesting and attention grabbing high grossing film without having too much of a problem; by having so much profit gained from other films, they will have the ability to create a top-notch film, which they then will be able to properly promote with good trailers and attention grabbing billboards, which will then eventually lead to the audience wanting to consume the media that we and the company had created. This would then lead to us, and the company, to make profit and therefore either create a sequel or use the money on different projects.
The production and distribution company Constantin Films doesn't seem to specialise in any sort of direction; they don't produce and distribute low budget movies, nor do they specialise on one certain genre. The only exception is that they do create soley German movies, which aren't available in any other language, such as Der Schuh des Manitu, Lissi und der Wilde Kaiser, or Fünf Freunde. Overall, their portfolio includes films in many different genres such as comedies (Dirty Grandpa), biographies (Florence Foster Jenkins), and more. I don't think that this will affect our idea of letting Constantin Films produce and distribute our film, as they have the ability to offer a wide range of genres, and meet many types of target audiences. I believe that it wouldn't be difficult for Constantin Films to successfully meet the target audiences demand for our thriller idea, and would most likely be able to produce it in a way that would be most beneficial to us, the idea, and the company.

Constantin Films is known for their wide range of films to meet any kind of target audience they wish to meet. By having produced/distributed films like Perfume and Seven, they already have an established audience of the thriller genre, which is beneficial to us with our idea as it is a thriller. By having that established audience they have the ability on doing market research on them, and figure out how they would like to see their thrillers and how they would like them to be executed. That would give us the ability to specifically target and adjust our idea to meet the audiences' needs and therefore perhaps make it even more successful in the long run. Constantin Films doesn't seem to have any other established branches that would target any audience directly, as they already are able to target any sort of audience in the long run.

Overall, I think that Constantin Films would be a good idea to pick as a company to produce and distribute our thriller as it would give us the opportunity to properly be able to create a thriller that would be successful and bring profit to the company and us in the long run.

  1. Fantastic detail that clearly displays the research you have done into your chosen institution, as well as understanding how your choice would affect your thriller.
Don’t forget that the blog is a visual aid, and while you have used pictures and video you should consider the design and layout of your post. However, overall this is excellent research post.
