Meeting with the Set Designers

Today we had a discussion with the set designers to organise what we need for our music video and how we could put everything together. Click here to see our idea, and click hre to get to our set design. We showed the 3D images which we put together to them, so they could get an idea what we were thinking of in terms of the set for the 1920s jazz club, the futuristic club and the shipping container.

Initially, their response seemed pretty positive, however it was suggested that we develop the idea and instead of having the dancers in just a modern element, to make it more imaginative, and to give a larger contrast. Therefore we decided we would probably have a 1920s element and then a futuristic element (a là the future in 2050). Whilst they seemed to be excited about the idea, they brought in new suggestions about things that could or probably need adjusting.
Also, we have a giant list of things we will need for our shoot.

A problem we ran into immediately was which instruments we are going to use, and where we would get them from. We have already attempted to get a few instruments, such as a violin and a clarinet, however they have said that they could or didn't want to participate in our project. We are now looking for alternatives.

Luke suggested that we could use Mike Elvin, who may be willing to participate. He can play the double bass and has an electric one, which would fit in with the futuristic element quite well. As an alternative for the violin we have lost, we might have to cast myself. The reason for this is that there is only a limited number of people who can play the violin at school, and the easiest alternative might be me. We could run into problems with this, however, as I'm supposed to be standing behind the camera rather than infront of it. Thankfully the jazz band is not our only focus and element, which could potentially make it possible. Other instruments we are still considering are a saxophone (which hasn't changed that much throughout the years), and potentially a piano and an electric one.

Here are pictures of the instruments we were thinking of incorporating in our music video. Some of these are easy to obtain, whereas others might be very difficult.

Rather than the modern element being incorporated into the dance element, we were thinking of going more futuristic with this as well. One comment that I kept bringing up is that the song doesn't actually change that much during the peak, and rather than being in a proper club setting, we then agreed on having a futuristic-robot type dance and general setting; the song fits in with this nicely as well.

Another thing that has to be improved upon is the switch between the 1920s and the futuristic elements. What we had in mind was that the scientist in his office would be pressing on a red button whilst hacking away on his computer, and that would then cause everyone to be transported into the future; the issue with this is that it may not be clear that there is a switch/transformation. What Luke suggested was using a lot of wires, and perhaps building some kind of contraption or something which the hacker could be building, and it then exploding, and then transporting them out. This may be a more clear transformation.

To make the set in the shipping container more interesting, we could elements such as a lot of wires
Luke suggested using contraptions such as William Robinson envisioned, which would be quite quirky. We'd have to think about how we can set this up but overall it shouldn't be too difficult. This can add to the comical sense that we kind of have within our music video. It is quite funky to begin with so this would tie in quite nicely. It really reminds me of Rube Goldberg and his machines.
