Audience Profile for the Song "Scarlet"

Audience profiling is a way for the music industry to categorise their audiences through detailed accounts, and segment them specifically to be able to target the market better afterwards. Rather than using the mass market as one segment, they prefer to split them up, sometimes to even find niche markets and to make more money by trying to make more genres and sections successful. This is usually according to the types/trends of music, and the music industry does further research into the demographics and psychological interest of people to be able to make their marketing more direct.

Demographic segmentation includes the JICNARS scale; this is the basic market research in accordance to gender, class, race, sexuality, and so forth. This narrows down the individual sections and then gives them the ability to target specific people immediately.

The levels I would associate the artists and the song "Scarlet" to the levels C2 (skilled manual) and D (semi and unskilled manual). This is because I imagine the people that associate with this band to be able to express their feels more openly and therefore be able to enjoy more emotional kinds of music, including kinds of metal. This isn't because they may nto be as wealthy, but rather because of their outlook on life and the stereotype given.

Using the VALS (Values Attitudes and Lifesyles) profile, the music industry is able to use psychographic segmentation to figure out what their target market's lifestyle is like, what their attitudes towards things, values, beliefs, and other lifestyle choices may include. By doing this the music industry will probably have a better chance in creating advertisements, music videos, album covers, and songs which will embody what their target audience is supposed to stand for.

The VALs I imagine would be suitable for the audience would be "MAKERS", who are people wo have skills of construction and self-sufficiency. They are politically conservative and they are unimpressed by possessions that are not useful. This is because the people that would like this kind of music would probably be more hands on and therefore prefer to go against the political views of the world.

Teenage VALS are other attributes that may be helpful to specificy the target market. I imagine these would be "Cynics" and "Drifters", which are people who have something to complain about and who just want to be accepted in any way possible. This would fit in with the image that we are trying to make up for our star. Click here to see Chris' word cloud.
