The Main Thriller Sub-Genres

A sub-genre, as already explained, is a section of a main genre. The thrillers have about 12 sub-genres, one of which an Action Thriller is not one of. An Action Thriller is a hybrid-genre, and not a sub-genre.
A Thriller used to be a sub-genre of Horror, it wasn't really a thing around 20 to 25 years ago. The Thriller genre was mainly brought up by Hitchcock, who is the godfather of thrillers, as he seemed to be the only one who was making them back then. All of the movies Hitchcock had created used to be seen as horror movies, but due to the increase in allowed graphical images in movies today, they no longer count as a horror movie, but as a Thriller, which has now become it's own genre.
Here are a few of the sub-genres of a Thriller:
Crime Thriller
This sub-genre's plot line includes things such as murders, robbery, manhunts, or serial killers; the plotline usually also focuses on the criminals and the protagonist. Examples of these types of thrillers would be: The Unusual Suspects, The Fugitive, Jagged Edge, Dirty Harry.
Psychological Thriller
A psychological thriller includes drama and mystery within the film; it deals with playing games with the mind, rather than showing a psychical threat, therefore creating suspense in that way. The protagonists' mind is usually being played with. Examples of these types of thrillers would be: Memento, Rear Window, Taxi Driver.
Erotic Thriller
An erotic thriller includes basic emphasis on eroticism and where sexual relationships and tension play an important part within the entire movie. Examples of these types of thrillers would be: Jennifer's Body, Basic Instinct, Dressed to Kill.
Supernatural Thriller
A supernatural thriller is a thriller where unreal elements are brought into the movie, mixed with tension, suspense, or plot twists. It is linked with psychic or supernatural abilities and usually have a fantasy element added to them. Examples of these types of thrillers would be: What Lies Beneath, Flatliners, The Skeleton Key.
Religious Thriller
A religious thriller might not always revolve around one specific religion, however do include elements such as exorcisms, demon possession, and churches. They incorporate religious themes, however overall look at the more supernatural aspect side. Examples of this type of thriller would be: The Ninth Gate, The Devil's Advocate.
Conspiracy Thriller
A conspiracy thriller is based on a conspiracy/a story that the story revolves around. Examples of this type of thriller would be: The Chancellor Manuscript, The Aquitane Progression.
Spy Thriller
A spy thriller revolves around the continuing theme of spies having to take violent action against a rival, whether it be a rival government, or other. This type of thriller usually looks at realistic elements that may or may not have a connection with the modern world. Examples of this type of thriller would be: Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy, Shadow Recruit.
Political Thriller
A political thriller usually looks at the theme of power and desparity, obviously including the government within the thriller itself. Examples of this type of thriller would be: The Ghost Writer, The Interpreter, Red Eye.
